Monos

Frequently Asked Questions

About

How are Monos suitcases made?

A lot goes into making an exceptional suitcase. Our luggage, accessories, bags, and apparel are designed at our studio in Vancouver, Canada. We work closely with our factory partners to create high-quality, sustainable products.

We use a virtually unbreakable aerospace-grade polycarbonate hard shell for our suitcases and to ensure they survive the toughest travel conditions, we put them through a battery of 40 tests. In addition, our manufacturing partners are always looking for environmental efficiencies, like collecting parts and plastics that can be reused or recycled for other industries. Components like the gaskets along the suitcase and spine are made from a special material called TPE, which is eco-friendly and compostable. The majority of brands in the market today opt for the cheaper PVC material, which is highly toxic and non-recyclable. Our high-performance wheels are designed and manufactured in-house to meet our exacting standards. For assembly, we only partner with factories that share our standards and values – on quality and materials, as well as clean, safe work environments. We maintain an SA8000 Certification which is based on internationally-recognized standards of decent work, including the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, ILO conventions, and national laws. We visit and collaborate with our partners frequently to find ways we can keep making our products better and more sustainable.

What is your stance on sustainable practices?

Travel should be a force for good – thoughtful, intentional, and designed to leave the world better than we found it. As a Certified B Corporation, Monos upholds the highest standards of social and environmental responsibility, ensuring that every decision aligns with our commitment to sustainability, transparency, and accountability.

Our products are crafted to stand the test of time, made with premium materials that are not only beautiful and functional but also more sustainable. Prioritizing quality over quantity, our travel pieces are built to last a lifetime, reducing waste and minimizing environmental impact. To further reduce our footprint, we use recyclable or reusable packaging and optimize shipping methods to cut down on emissions.

Beyond creating durable, sustainable products, we take active steps toward restoring the planet. Through our partnership with veritree, we've pledged to plant 1,291,259 trees, helping to restore vital ecosystems, sequester carbon, and support communities affected by deforestation. Every tree planted is a step toward a healthier planet for future generations.

Sustainability is not a destination – it's an ongoing journey. We are constantly exploring new ways to innovate, reduce our impact, and contribute to a more sustainable future. Every Monos purchase supports these initiatives, allowing you to travel with confidence, knowing you're making a positive difference for the planet.

Are your products vegan?

All of our products are vegan. Details that look and feel like leather are actually ultra-microfibre vegan leather – the result of a technologically advanced technique that combines ultra-fine microfibre bundles with high-grade polyurethane resin to closely mimic the microscopic structure of leather.

Are your products PFAS-free?

Yes. All Monos products are free from intentionally added PFAS (per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances). As part of our commitment to sustainability and safer materials, we’re proud to ensure our products meet high standards for health, safety, and environmental responsibility.

What makes parts of Monos products antimicrobial?

Certain components of our products are treated with a silver-ion antimicrobial coating, such as Microban®, which helps inhibit the growth of bacteria on the surface. This invisible layer offers added peace of mind and interiors fresher for longer between cleans.

Luggage

Do you offer monogramming?

At this time, we offer monogramming exclusively in our retail stores for our luggage tags.

Do your suitcases nest inside each other?

Yes! Our Carry-On and Carry-On Plus, including the Expandable versions, nest neatly inside both the Check-In Medium and Check-In Large. The Check-In Medium, whether Classic or Expandable, also nests inside the Check-In Large. It’s a simple, space-saving solution for storing your luggage when not in use.

For our Hybrid and Aluminum collections, the Carry-On nests inside the Check-In Medium, while the Carry-On Plus fits inside the Check-In Large.

Compare luggage and find out more here.

How much do Monos suitcases weigh?

We’ve designed lightweight suitcases without compromising integrity or durability. Our luggage has a qualitative difference you can feel – from the handles to the wheels and everything in between – all while staying competitively light.

  • The Carry-On has a weight of 7.01 lb.
  • The Carry-On Plus has a weight of 7.38 lb.
  • The Check-In Medium has a weight of 9.59 lb.
  • The Check-In Large has a weight of 10.58 lb.

Which Carry-On size fits the airline guidelines?

Both Carry-On and Carry-On Plus fit most airline guidelines globally.

Compare the two sizes here and view the airline compatibility guide.

Does the Expandable Carry-On fit in the overhead bin when expanded?

Yes! The Expandable Carry-On and Expandable Carry-On Pro are designed to meet standard airline cabin size requirements even when expanded. Only the depth increases, so it still fits comfortably in most overhead bins. That extra space comes in handy without compromising on convenience.

Which Carry-On suits me best?

Take a look at this page, where we compare the specifications and sizes of our luggage. If you have further questions, feel free to reach out to our team to help make the best decision for you!

What does the "Plus" mean?

The "Plus" refers to an added 1 inch in the suitcase's length and width, and 0.5 inch in depth, providing you additional packing space.

We offer our Carry-Ons and Carry-On Pro in Plus sizes:

What is the difference between capacity and volume?

Capacity measures how much can actually fit inside the luggage, accounting for shape, internal parts and compartments. We measure capacity by filling the luggage with small balls, each equal to one millilitre, and then counting how many balls it holds.

Volume is the total space inside the luggage, found by multiplying length, width, and height.

What are the differences between the Classic and Hybrid Collection?

Our Hybrid luggage collection shares many features with our Classic line, including the ultra-sturdy telescopic handle, a polycarbonate shell, high-performance 360° wheels, and grab handles.

However, the Hybrid Collection is our premium line, offering the look and feel of aluminum without the extra weight. It features a zipperless design reinforced with an aluminum frame at the center seam and anodized aluminum corner guards to enhance durability. Additionally, it is equipped with two aluminum, TSA-Approved latch locks for secure closure.

How do I open and set the lock on my Monos suitcase?

If you’re a visual learner, here are two short videos showing you how to open the lock(s) on your Monos suitcase.

Luggage with zippers

To open your Monos suitcase for the first time, ensure the combination dials are set to 0-0-0. Then find the slider with a small arrow on it and slide this towards the pointed direction. The zippers will pop off, allowing you to open the suitcase.

To set your own combination for the first time, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the dials to the opening combination. Press down the reset button with a pen until you hear a click. The button will stay pressed in.
  2. Set your own combination by turning the dials.
  3. Push the slider button in the direction of the arrow until the reset button pops back up. Be sure to memorize your combination. To set a new one, repeat the steps above.

Hybrid luggage without zippers

To open your Monos Hybrid suitcase for the first time, ensure the combination dials are set to 0-0-0 on both locks. Then, simply press the release button on the bottom end of each lock. The clasps will pop open, allowing you to open the suitcase.

To set your own combinations for the first time, follow these steps:

  1. Turn the dials to the opening combination.
  2. From the back of each lock, you will find a switch marked with A and B. To reset the code, flip the switch from A to B.
  3. Set your own combination by turning the dials.
  4. Flip the switch back from B to A. Be sure to memorize your combination. To set a new one, repeat the steps above.

Please note that once you set your locks, no one else will know how to open your bag – including us. We recommend keeping the combination(s) somewhere safe so you don’t lock yourself out.

What if I've locked myself out of my luggage?

If you have locked yourself out of your luggage, we recommend running all possible combinations from 0-0-0 to 9-9-9. This will take about 15 minutes. Please note that once you’ve set your lock combination on your luggage from its original 0-0-0 setting, there is no way for us to know what your personal combination is. In the event that you are locked out of your luggage and running all possible combinations does not open the suitcase, contact us on live chat or at [email protected] for next steps.

How do I care for my luggage?

To clean the polycarbonate shell and interior lining, use a soft, damp cloth with warm water and mild dish soap.

For stubborn scuff marks on the shell that water and soap can’t easily remove, use the included eco-friendly eraser sponge.

Frequent flyer? If you want an extra layer of protection for your luggage, we recommend our durable, water-resistant luggage cover, which provides head-to-toe coverage from dirt, scuffs, and scratches for your suitcase.

What other steps can I make to ensure the longevity of my luggage?

As you travel and explore, your luggage will inevitably take some wear and tear. We think that the character of your luggage grows with time and use, but we also recommend regular care for your items so they remain your trusted companions for a lifetime of travel.

Our suitcase shells are constructed with a virtually unbreakable aerospace-grade polycarbonate. Like all types of polycarbonate, Monos luggage isn’t immune to scuffs and scratches, especially in transit – airports and airlines are hard on suitcases!

  • When your luggage isn’t in use, we recommend keeping in the linen dust bag provided to prevent your suitcase from accumulating dirt and dust.
  • When your suitcase is in use, you can give it an extra layer of protection with our luggage cover.
  • We recommend our packing cubes to help you pack efficiently and prevent an overstuffed suitcase.
  • The antimicrobial garment and shoe bags included with your luggage can be laundered regularly.
  • You can disinfect your luggage by wiping down the handles, wheels, and shell with disinfectant wipes.

Sunglasses

Do the sunglasses have a warranty?

Every pair of Monos sunglasses is backed by our Lifetime Warranty – coverage for the craftsmanship and quality of the parts that matter most. Included with every purchase, for life.

  • Lifetime guarantee on frame, materials, and craftsmanship
  • 2-year coverage on lenses
  • Lifetime replacement for loss or accidental damage – drops, falls, sit-ons, and the everyday mishaps – at 50% off the original price
What is the return policy for sunglasses?

We offer a free 30-day return policy for unused sunglasses in brand-new condition, with original packaging.

How will these fit?

If you have a pair you love wearing, look on the inside of either temple – most frames have three numbers printed there (something like 50–20–140).

Compare them to ours:

  • Lens width shapes how wide the frame looks on your face. Within 2–3 mm of yours will feel familiar.
  • Bridge is the gap between the lenses, and the number that matters most for comfort. Too narrow pinches; too wide slides.
  • Temple is the length of the arm. A few millimetres either way is rarely noticeable.

If the numbers aren't printed on your glasses
Lay your pair flat and measure across the front, outer edge to outer edge. Ours measures roughly 112 mm across. Within a few millimetres will feel familiar.

If you don't wear glasses
Hold a standard credit card horizontally just below your eyes, edge to edge with your temples. A credit card is 85mm wide. If our frame (112 mm across) feels about a card-and-a-half wide, you're in range. Our Small–Medium fit suits faces around 125–140mm wide, measured cheekbone to cheekbone.

A note on adjustability
Every pair is built with precision hinges and an integrated metal wire core running through each temple, so even if the fit isn't perfect out of the box, the arms can be gently shaped for a fit that's truly yours.

Are the temples (arms) adjustable or flexible?

Yes, the temples have a metal wire core, which allows them to be shaped for a custom fit.

How do they fit for people with high nose bridges / low nose bridges?

The nose bridges are integrated acetate without adjustable nose pads. The wire-core temples can be reshaped for a custom fit.

Are they ethically made or sustainably sourced?

Mazzucchelli M49 bio-based cellulose acetate is used for the frames, a sustainable alternative. We chose Mazzucchelli for their ISCC PLUS certification, FSC-sourced cellulose, and carbon renewal partnership with Eastman to recover processing waste. They manufacture in both Italy and China.

Are the lenses polarized?

Our CAT.2 and CAT.3 ZEISS CR39 polymer lenses are not polarized to best support all uses including reading screens and seeing in dim conditions.

What UV protection level do they offer? UV400?

Lenses are UV400, offering 100% UV protection.

Are the lenses scratch-resistant?

Zeiss CR39 lenses include scratch-resistant treatment as standard.

Can the lenses be replaced if scratched or damaged?

Monos does not provide repair services. We would replace the entire product if it falls under our 2-year coverage for lens material and craftsmanship.

What's the lens material?

Mira sunglasses use Zeiss CR39 polymer lenses. CR39 is described as the highest quality polymer-based lens in terms of strength and optical clarity. Zeiss has led the science of optics since 1846.

Are there different tint options? What conditions is each tint best for?

Yes. Two lens categories are offered across the collection:

  • CAT.2 (medium tint, 18–43% VLT): Light G15, Grey Green, and Brown Gradient - better for variable or lower-light conditions
  • CAT.3 (dark tint, 8–18% VLT): all other lens colors (Black, Brown, Dusk, etc.) - better for bright sun
What is Category (CAT) and Visible Light Transmission (VLT)?

Lens category by colour

Frame colour Lens colour Lens category
Crystal Emerald
Grey Green CAT.2
Crystal Espresso
Dusk CAT.3
Tortoise
Brown Gradient CAT.2
Black
Smoke CAT.3

Sunglass lens categories indicate the percentage of Visible Light Transmission (VLT) – how much light passes through the lens. Higher VLT percentages result in lighter lenses that allow more light in, while lower VLT percentages create darker tints that reduce brightness and limit the amount of light reaching the eye.

VLT Category (CAT) Lens tint
80 – 100%
0 None or very light tint
43 – 80%
1 Light tint
18 – 43%
2 Medium tint
8 – 18%
3 Dark tint
3 – 8%
4 Very dark tint
Do they have an anti-reflective coating?

No.

Are they suitable for driving?

Standard CAT.2 and CAT.3 lenses are suitable for daylight driving.

What material are the frames made of?

100% Mazzucchelli cellulose acetate. Mazzucchelli was established in 1849, is six generations family-operated, and is an industry pioneer known for innovation, quality, tradition, and craftsmanship.

Are they flexible or rigid? Will they bend without breaking?

The temples include a metal wire core and are designed to be shaped for a custom fit. The frame fronts are durable but not bendable.

Are they hypoallergenic?

Cellulose acetate is plant-based and generally well-tolerated by sensitive skin.

Are the hinges spring-loaded or standard?

We use standard 3-barrel or 5-barrel hinges, depending on the model – offering increased durability, stability, and longevity by distributing stress across the interlocking metal parts.

Are the screws prone to loosening?

The 5-barrel hinge design is specifically highlighted for stability and longevity.

Are the nose pads adjustable or fixed?

Acetate frames of this style use fixed bridges rather than adjustable nose pads.

What is Package Protection Shipping Insurance?

As more packages move directly from our door to yours, the occasional shipping mishap can still occur. And when it does, couriers often make resolution difficult, leaving customers with forms, delays, and uncertainty.

That’s why we created Package Protection Shipping Insurance. Add this optional coverage to your order for peace of mind from checkout to delivery. If your package is lost, damaged, or stolen in transit, we’ll replace it – immediately and without question. It also includes free return shipping and exchanges (normally $25).

    Returns & Exchanges

What are the details of the 100-day trial?

We’ve quality-tested our luggage extensively, and we’re confident it can handle just about anything your travels throw its way (and if not, that’s what our warranty is for). While we believe you’ll love your Monos luggage from day one, we also understand that sometimes you just need to see and feel it for yourself. That’s why we offer a 100-day trial, so you can take your time deciding if it’s the right travel companion for you.

One important note: To be eligible for return, your luggage needs to stay in brand new, unused condition. The 100-day trial is for you to try it at home.

We recommend packing it with items similar to what you’d bring on a trip and rolling it around indoors to get a feel for the size, weight, and maneuverability. If it’s not quite the right fit – maybe the size feels off, or the colour isn’t quite you – no problem. Simply initiate your return within 100 days of receiving it.

To help us process your return smoothly, we do require clear photos of the luggage to confirm it’s in brand new, unused condition with all original packaging intact. Please note that the trial will be voided if the suitcase shows signs of use in transit or is returned in unsaleable condition.

The return shipping fee of $25 will be deducted from your total refund, processed when your return arrives at our distribution center.

What is your return policy for sunglasses?

We offer a free 30-day return policy for unused sunglasses in brand-new condition, with original packaging.

What is your return policy for all other items?

For bags, apparel, and accessories, you may initiate a return within 30 days of the delivery of your item. Items eligible for return must be in brand new, unused condition with all original packaging intact. To help us assess the condition, photos will be required before a return label can be issued. The return shipping fee of $25 will be deducted from your total refund.

Luggage Tags, Kiyo UVC Water Bottles, and Alphabet Stickers are final sale.

    What is your exchange policy?

If you wish to exchange an item, you will need to initiate a return for your original purchase, and make a separate purchase for the item you wish to receive instead. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] for assistance.

Can I return or exchange an item in-store?

Yes, we accept returns and exchanges at our retail locations. However, we recommend you to initiate a return online. We made the experience convenient and seamless by sending you a return label within a few seconds to apply, and drop off the package at your local carrier office.

What are my options if I do not have the original packaging?

Items eligible for return must be in brand new, unused condition with all original packaging intact. To help us assess the condition, photos will be required before a return label can be issued.

If I purchased an item during a promotion, can I exchange and receive the same discount?

If you process an exchange, the price of the new item will be the current price we are offering. Discounts may differ based on the promotion available during the time of exchange.

Can I return or exchange a gifted item?

At this time, we’re unable to process returns or exchanges for gifted items directly. We recommend connecting with the original purchaser, as they’ll be able to assist with any return or exchange requests on your behalf.
